Coat of many colors

In the Mayport Mirror article, Bill Austin, mentioned the coat of many colors that my mom had made for me. Unfortunately, I don’t have it anymore, due to someone else, let’s say not being a nice person. I do have the bedspread that was made exactly like the coat. So, I thought I would share a picture in case anyone out there might have made one similar back in the late 60’s or early 70’s.

It was made from all polyester material and then she used knitting thread to do the design. It is not completed due to my mom being diagnosed with breast cancer, sometime in 1969. Since that time it has been stored. When I was home the last time I decided to take it with me.

Due to the unique design and the age of the quilt/bedspread I inquired with a professional quilter in Pensacola.  She suggested finishing the under side with a solid material stitching around the edges only.  I ended up putting it back in a protective bag in our storage area under our bed.

When Hats of Hope, came about and thinking about my mom, that is when I took it out from under our bed storage again and spread it out on the bed. It will NOT return to the storage area because I am going to use it from now on. Some ask why!!!! It is beautiful and it represents who my mom was and what a wonderful lady she was. It is a story that I want to share and being stored away it will only wither away with all the wonderful stories, even the hardships of her cancer.

So, if you have something from your parents use it, share it, tell stories, write them down to pass on to your children and their children. It is something they will cherish. If you store it, no one will see it or hear the stories……

Sandra I have not been able to find that type of polyester in this area. I don’t know if they even make that type of material anymore. LOLOL…I do wish that I still had my coat that my mom had made. I am so thankful that I still have the quilt. I am going to finish the underside next month as the lady from Pensacola had suggested.
